If there is one thing that you cannot miss out when you visit Thailand, is that you must try out the street foods in the area. With stalls upon stalls lining up at the beachfront, markets, and streets, you can’t miss them even if you try. They’re a bundle of delicious food, guaranteeing that you’ll crave for them within the hour you finish chowing down.
Whether you’re in a hurry to go somewhere and need to grab a quick bite or want to taste what the place has to offer, here are four local street food favorites you cannot miss in Phuket:
1. Roti
The roti you’ll find cooked up and sold in Thailand are generally on the sweeter side, perfect to satisfy that sweet tooth of yours.
Lined up at the beach day and night, stalls pump these out like hotcakes, or in this case, hot pancakes! Filled with ingredients of your choice, such as fruit and spreading, these crunchy and sweet snacks are nothing short of enjoyable. We highly recommend that you try out the local favorite banana-filled pancake that’s drenched with chocolate and condensed milk. We promise you’ll be back for more!
2. Som Tum
Famous not only in Thailand but also around the world, Som Tum, which is a papaya salad, is one of the best salads you’ll ever eat. Packed with chilies and plenty of other ingredients, the combination of sweet, sour, spicy, and salty is out of this world.
You’ll easily spot stalls that sell these, as they’re busy pounding away in their mortars with green papayas right by their side. Do remember that Thai people love their chilies, so if you aren’t a huge chili fan, ask them to reduce the spice. We’re not telling you to say “no chili” because Som Tum isn’t the same with the kick!
3. Moo Ping
If you want something a little more savory and meaty, Moo Ping is your best friend! Moo Ping, or grilled pork, is juicy pork meat skewered and grilled over a hot flame. While this is a delicious snack, it can even become a fully-fledged meal. Order it with some sticky rice and sauces, and you have yourself a satisfying breakfast, lunch, or even dinner!
4. Gai Yang
Similar to Moo Ping is Gai Yang, or grilled chicken. With the meat tenderized and marinated in different sauces and spices, this fantastic chicken on a stick will be like no other grilled chicken you’ve ever had in your life––amazingly tasty and delicious. In fact, it is so tasty that we highly recommend you buy a bunch at once!
Similar to Moo Ping, you can turn Gai Yang into a full meal. Grab a few sticks and a few packets of sticky rice and enjoy your meal!
